What is a Technique Sheet?

At Studio 180 Design we create tools that help you make many of quilting’s common units and blocks. Each tool comes with a full set of instructions that shows you how to make the particular unit that the tool is designed for and give the option for multiple sizes.

But did you know many of our tools can make more than just one type of unit? We’ve created Technique Sheets just for this reason! Here is some great information to help you understand them and how to expand the use of your tools.

Each sheet is 8½” x 11”, laminated, and three hole punched to make them easy to store. We like to put them in a three-ring binder with printed copies of the tool instructions that you can download from our website. On the top of each sheet is some useful information. In the center is the name of the technique. In the right-hand corner is the name of the tool needed along with a star rating. The star rating tells you how difficult the technique is on a scale of 1 to 5.

Once you move past the general information at the top of a sheet, we tell you a little bit about the technique, details on cutting, and then we move onto the process of making the unit. On most sheets you will find a chart that tells you what to cut. These charts are similar to what you find in your tool instructions. Just like the original units that you can make with your tools, you can make multiple sizes of the units that are detailed on Technique Sheets

The process of how to make the unit is written in the same straight-forward and easy to understand format as our tool instructions. There are clear images to help you with stitching, tool placement, and trim down. Many of the sheets also give you ideas of different things you can do with the units you create.

Almost all of the tools have at least one Technique Sheet associated with them. The Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star and other star tools have multiple companion sheets that open up a world of possibilities. The only limit is your imagination.

Constellation made using the Lemoyne Star Technique sheets         Hextravaganza made using the Star 60 Technique sheets.

Deb has taped demonstration videos of most of the Technique Sheets! You can find them on our YouTube channel

You can purchase these useful sheets from your local quilt shop or on our website. We’ve also made them available for paid download.
