Have your ever been to a Luau or at least dreamed of one? Certain things come to mind - beautiful and bright colors, tropical foods, flower leis, tiki torches, crashing waves, and toes in the sand. This fun design is certain to put you in that same sort of very festive mood. Grab some bright fat quarters, a background the color of the sky (day or night!) and have some fun with this quick and easy pattern.
The Wedge Star tool is sure to be an exciting addition to your quilting toolbox! Designed to make a variety of different blocks based on 45º sub-units, ranging from simple kaleidoscope blocks to complex stars with diamond points going north, south, east and west. And with 22 different size options and the ability to swap sub-units in and out of blocks, you’ll be able to create virtually unlimited designs. This is a tool guaranteed to keep your creativity flowing, project after project!
As an added benefit, we’ve also included a free bonus project, Freelancer, in the Wedge Star’s instruction set. And with all the possibilities the Wedge Star™ tool offers, this project can truly be yours; just change the size and coloring to make a spectacular project as unique as you are. The quilt size and fabric yardage will, of course, depend on the size blocks you choose.
Add a real twist to your Wedge Star projects by cutting diamonds from pieced fabric strips. Your stars will spin either clockwise or counter clockwise and can be varied in oodles of ways. This is a fun next step in creating Wedge Star quilts. The strip sizes in the chart come very close to dividing the diamonds in two equal size strips for a simple Twisted Star.
Another great technique to use with your Wedge Star tool. You will construct four patch diamonds using strip piecing, trim, add small wedges, and trim the inside point so you have four perfectly sized diamonds in each star point every time. With this technique you can create twenty two block size variations from 6" up to 48" in 2" increments.
Create the look of curves with just straight line piecing. Careful fabric placement will enhance the illusion of interlocking rings and curves. Construct the units oversized and use the Wedge Star™ tool to trim, so you don't struggle to make the blocks. An addicting process with endless variations. This pattern can also be adapted to 10” precut squares.
